One Day

by Marty Weiss

It’s too easy to dwell on things we don’t have.

It’s too easy to reflect on what we’ve lost.

It’s too easy in the face of hate to see ourselves in a grave.

It’s too easy to continue adding up the cost.

It’s hard to stand strong in a world of carveouts.

It’s hard to battle for our civic and civil rights.

It’s hard to find peace and cast away doubts.

It’s hard to hold our fists high in the air, to fight!

It’s inspiring to realize we’ve been warriors all our lives.

It’s inspiring to realize our first steps and words were achievement.

It’s inspiring to realize we are still warriors because we survive.

It’s inspiring to realize that from ashes we CAN ascend!

We have fears, yet we have allies, fighters and each other.

We have the right to exist in our world as a team.

We have the right to stand strong as sisters and brothers.

We have the right to still pursue some dreams!

One day, we will all move on.

One day, we will venture to that next realm.

One day, a century from now, our shames will long be forgotten.

One day, in another dimension, our spirits will command a new helm!

So for today, take that road less traveled by.

So for today, discover new dreams, new friends, new lives.

So for today, embrace our few loves and treasures ‘til we die.

So for today, enjoy those wonderful few indispensables and thrive!
