Sex Exceptionalism in Culture and Law - More Harm than Good?
Tuesday, March 19th at 7:30 PM EST (4:30 PM PST)
Join Restorative Action Alliance for a nuanced panel discussion on how cultural ideas and the moral panic around sex and sexuality influence law, policy, and society. Are we breaking cycles of harm or creating them?
Why Do We Treat Sex Crimes Differently Than Other Crimes? Sex exceptionalism is the idea that sexual behavior is seen as fundamentally different from other human behavior and deserves special treatment. This has deep implications in the ongoing struggle to end cycles of sexual violence.
The panel will feature Aya Gruber, law professor and author of The Feminist War on Crime; C. Dreams, writer, public theologian, historian and activist; Abasi Amin, activist and founder of ASR Advocates; and Emily Horowitz, professor, sociologist, and author of From Rage to Reason in conversation about this important issue.
“There was this notion that the feminist position was always more, more, more. More incarceration, more policing, more prison....But it was also non-feminists who were just having a hard time talking about it and didn’t approach it like you would approach other crimes.” - Aya Gruber
